Base Metabolic Rate?

Base metabolic rate (BMR) is an approximate calculation of the amount of calories that you body will consume each day in order to maintain your ability to sustain life, by that we mean things like breathing, blood circulation, processing our nutrition, and growth or repair (cell production).

Your BMR is generally a simple calculation to make, however without full details of the individual the results are still only an estimate that requires further information.

We can use the basic calculations to provide a guide to our nutritional requirements. By adding further information to the calculation of a estimation of our active calories burned for each day we can arrive at a figure that can guide our calorie intake in conjunction with if we wish to lose or build weight, lose body fat or gain muscle mass.

Often when looking at our nutrition to reduce body fat and ultimately weight we reduce our calorie intake below safe levels and hinder the body’s ability to lose weight which usually results in seeing that the nutrition plan we have embarked upon does not work and we stop. Usually thinking we need to eat less, making the situation even worse.

There is a lot of truth in the saying “you need to eat to lose weight”.

Here comes the geeky bit. This calculation is not a complicated one as lone as you can fill in the details and be honest about your activity. Your exercise is relative to you. What you may call intense will some one else’s light. This is where you coach will use their knowledge and experience to complete the calculation specifically to you.

Men: BMR = 66+(13.7*body weight)+(5*height in cm)-(6.8*age)*activity level

Women: BMR = 655+(9.6*weight)+(1.8*height in cm)-(4.7*age)*activity level

To set your self on the right track, arrange an appointment and start looking at eating the right amount. Then use your record of daily nutrition (using MyFitnessPal for example) to see if you are hitting the right targets.
